This is the story regarding Michael Chour's negligent and dishonest dealings with a kind-hearted man named Vong Vannak.
Michael
Chour abandoned these dogs at Vongs and left him holding the bag! This
is so outrageous, dishonest and unacceptable but it's typical of the
manner in which Chour and SOA operates - with no ethics!
In
summary Chour purchased a number of dogs from slaughterhouses in
Cambodia. He approached Vong Vannak to take care of these dogs, that he
would pay Vong a monthly stipend and that SOA/Chour would pay for the
dogs' sterilization and all necessary medical costs.
Michael and SOA abandoned Vong and abandoned the dogs and renaged on his "deal"!
50+ Dogs Abandoned by Sound of Animals in Cambodia
UPDATE Two
days ago, I made a post about the plight of a desperate man in Cambodia
seeking help to sterilize and immunize 42 dogs – originally 16 dogs,
but soon to be 50+ dogs. Vong’s repeated requests to treat the DMT dogs
purchased from butchers in Cambodia by Michael Chour, were ignored over a
3-year period.
Feeling
abandoned, overwhelmed and desperate, Vong felt it was time to speak
out and get help for the dogs. A team of rescuers raised their hands to
urgently treat these dogs with lifesaving immunizations and
sterilizations.
With
great sadness, we see today that Vong has been discarded by Michael
Chour and The Sound of Animals. A Facebook post released today states
“we will no longer be donating to Vong to help his dogs”. Possibly the
most disappointing part of this entire disgrace is that Vong was never
contacted by SOA staff, not a single person, to inform him of this
decision to cancel their agreement and his monthly wage. I had to inform
him myself after reading SOA’s post, he was understandably
heartbroken.
Contrary to SOA’s post, at no time did a team “take over care” of
these dogs. It remains the responsibility of Michael Chour and Vong to
care for these animals. A team stepped up to medically treat these
animals, who have never seen a vet.
Vong had an agreement with Michael Chour, 16 dogs turned to 50+ and
that was not part of the agreement but Vong persevered as best he
could.
Vong requested help several times for sterilzations and immunizations, this was ignored by Michael Chour.
Vong is now abandoned and his wage cancelled, without as much as a
message or phone call. Vong is a family man and has children to
consider, along with 50+ dogs. What reputable organization behaves like
this?
Instead of taking ownership of these problems, SOA have dismissed it
all under a thinly vailed “well wishes” post which shows a deliberate
and total breach of their responsibilities. How do dogs lovers and
genuine rescuers wash their hands of 50 dogs needing vet care?
PROFESSIONALLY, I would say this -
Sound
of Animals (SOA) - Your rescue ethics are highly questionable. Your
management and crisis control methodologies are highly questionable.
Your complete lack of ownership in this entire devastating mess is
abhorrent. SOA administration staff and Michael Chour not only put all
these dogs at high risk of disease, they did nothing to control
population – a trend we’ve seen with the mass of caged unsterilzed
animals piled up at the Blue Dream Shelter only a month ago. Now you
have fuelled the DMT, abandoned these dogs, neglected your
responsibilities, haphazardly washed your hands – without even
contacting the employed caretaker.
PERSONALLY, I would say this -
You
guys really are assholes. Kindness is magic, it would help for you to
remember that and why we rescue in the first place. The removal of
Michael Chour and current Administrators is unquestionably in the best
interests of the animals in moving forward.
As mentioned in my previous post, medical treatments for the first 6
dogs are funded and they will be transported on 18/11/19 to Siem Reap. A
further 2 or 3 rounds of sterilizations and immunizations will be
required for the remaining female dogs.
Due to these developments, we will look at arranging a small
fundraiser to keep Vong and his family on their feet while they make
this transition. Vong and I have discussed paying for the first 3 months
of a utility/truck hire, so Vong can sell and deliver water around his
village.
We also endeavor to raise enough money to feed the dogs for 3 months.
Then Vong, with your continued support, will stand on his own two feet.
The upcoming fundraiser and all relevant details will be posted tomorrow
after food costing is verified, thank you in advance for your
kindness."
And then magically some amazing people and orgs stepped up to assist Vong. This is what they accomplished :
